This was the last ever Hockey Night In Canada broadcast to ever be held from the Winnipeg Arena. Fittingly enough doing the play by play was Canada’s own and Winnipeg resident Don Wittman who shared a real passion for the sport of hockey and the city of Winnipeg. Along beside him was former Winnipeg Jet, Brian Hayward. This game was certainly worthy of a HNIC Broadcast as the Flames and Jets battled to the end. Winnipeg at this point was fighting to keep hold of at least 8th place in the standings with only one more game remaining in their final season at the Winnipeg Arena before going on the road to finish the season. The Jets would manage to score twice late in the game to go ahead by a final score of 4-3 bumping them to 6th place in the standings. They would however end up finishing 8th place by the end of the season, having to face Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The rest as they say is history…….Bring’Em Back!
Winnipeg Jets VS Calgary Flames: Last HNIC Broadcast From Winnipeg Arena 04/06/96 – Part 15/15

Holy shit. When Tkachuk scored I seriously got the same tingle of excitement I used to when the Jets were here! I can almost feel the excitement in the old Arena. It might have sucked but it was so memorable! I miss the Jets!
@JHendrix70 Agreed however there are always those people who want nothing to do with sports or anything else that makes living here enjoyable. Just look at the opposition to the MTS Centre and now the new Bomber stadium at the U of M. I hate when these people say that we should be fixing roads and fixing potholes and that’s it. The thing is, those projects will ALWAYS need money and if we just spent money on that, our city would have nothing else!
2 in the morning and I should be sleeping. But everytime I watch these old jets videos, it bugs me. We were a team that could beat any team in the league, we had the bet fans, and were the smallest market. I don’t know any better feelgood story than that. Bettman, get your fucking head out of your ass, and bring a team back to Winnipeg.
amen brother
Well, that is the sort of reaction I want people to feel watching these videos. There are a lot of people that say Winnipeg will NEVER get the NHL back again however; after watching these games, video’s, I only hope that those same people remember how great the NHL made this city, and how hard they fought to keep it here. Gone for 13 years, threre is a great chance of them coming back for 2010 or 2011 at latest, and we need those naysayers back on board!
Bring’Em Back!
damn this makes me sad
I am from Manitoba and I was actually at this game. I was only 16 at the time. I remember that when Tkachuk scored that 4th goal how loud the place was. It was incredible! Sadly that was the last Jets game and, to date, the last NHL game I have been to. Gary Betteman is a little weasel… it is obvious that he does not want a team back in Winnipeg.. Instead, he choses to keep them in a place where no one cares about hockey. Betteman, listen to this and get your weasely head outta your ass!!
It’s 3:30 in the morning and I should be sleeping, but instead, I’m reliving hockey nostalgia—thank you for posting this game, JHendrix. Not only it is awesome to watch a Jets game again from start to finish, but just to watch an HNIC broadcast from when I first started to love and follow hockey as much as I do (1995/96). The sights, the sounds, the aesthetics, the voices… everything. It’ll never be that good again.
The papers made the fact Kansas City drew 11,603 for their first ever exhibition game in the new building and first game since ’05 a big deal! They said that “based on the fan support tonight, Kansas City clearly is ready for the NHL”………umm…..well, Winnipeg has had 15,015, 13,500 and 13,000 over the last 3 years seeing the same team that we ALL hate and now just uses us to make money once a year, and yet, KC is the place to be! Gimme a break!
Bring’Em Back!
I still remember on Jan 5th 1994 in Phx there was a neutral site game between the Habs and Nordiques and the crowd was super small, even thought there were rumors about the Nords relocating there in a near future. On top of that this was a regular season game! I can’t wait next season to see how much the NYI game in Kansas City will draw and how much other teams will struggle.
I wonder if some NHL teams will do like the MTL Expos in 03-04 and play some of their home games away or elsewhere
Well, considering they give 1000′s away per game & people still don’t go……..I don’t think there poor attendance numbers would change too much!
Bring’Em Back!
I wonder how many fans per game the Yotes would draw if the cheapest tickets were $45
An interesting note about the Coyotes, Gretzky is the coach. What’s interesting is that back in 1978, when the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA went bankrupt, the team that came in second to try and sign Gretzky was none other than the Jets! Who knows how different history may have been had they been successful in signing him? Bring back the Jets!
Bring back the Jets!
The Coyotes don’t have fans or money
i know =P
awee i wished that Zalapski can play for Calgary again
Coyotes are in more trouble than any team in NHL History! They will certainly be looking for any way to get out of their arena clause and, considering they’ve already taken out approx; $80 MILLION Dollar loan to ensure they can make payroll, etc, seems Bankruptcy is not too far away!
Bring’Em Back!
word on the streets is the coyotes are for sale
bring em back
Deafening Crowd! Best in hockey…..We’ll get a chance again soon!
