Hey Stephen Jay Gould, you friggin’ Bronx Bummer rump-swab ! You might want to check your historical “facts”; Richardson DID NOT have to jump when Willie McCovey drilled that line drive to make the final out in the 1962 Series! He caught that bullet at his waist….

I recorded live the call of maz’s winning HR…the radio announcer words were ” Art Ditmar throws…here’s a swing and a high fly ball hit deep to left field this may do it…back to the wall goes Berra…it is over the fence home run Pirates win.” The announcer called Ralph Terry..Art Ditmar. I’m serious…I have it on tape…

@UncleMikeNJ OK, gotcha. The rest of your post, very true. I’m not sure what happened, but they should have kept Jim Leyland as manager. Lloyd McClendon? A JOKE! And he stayed around for a while! They need another Danny Murtaugh, but then again, he was one of a kind!

  4. UncleMikeNJ says:

Well, I meant SINCE 1960. 1971 and ’79. The thing is, from 1960 until about 1981 or so, and again from 1990 to 1992, the Pirates were always in the mix, at least contending. 1970-92, 23 seasons, 9 Division Titles (and very nearly a couple of others), 2 World Championships. A lot of teams around since then have done far less well. And yet the Pirates have been so poorly run. If management ever got a clue and got the Pirates back to the Playoffs, we’d soon hear PNC Park is too small.

@UncleMikeNJ Make that 3 for the Pirates. 1960, 1971, 1979. Sorry but it means that much to me :) PS I agree, a Buc fan should have been interviewed. I’m tired of seeing Yankee fans whining about this one. GET OVER IT!

    Bill Mazeroski!!!!!!!!!

When will the Pirates ever have a team like that or a winning team for that matter. 17 years of losing. Never did I think when I stayed up to watch a one legged Sid Bream beat Pittsburgh in 92 that would be the last time they would make the playoffs

Whats the name of the song at the start of the video clip?

  12. GiveADogABohnel5 says:

Good shot at 1:51 of Berra watching it go over the wall
I made a video of this on my channel too, but this is probably better. Please check mine out though!

  13. GiveADogABohnel5 says:

Most important part is the fact that they HAD to hit it 400 feet- no chip shots!

UncleMike: You are right about Burns — why put a pair of whiners up there? But the whining started before Maz rounded third. Bobby Richardson as MVP? Yes, he had good stats, but much of his production came in garbage time in the Yanks 3 blow outs. Maz should have been MVP.

  15. UncleMikeNJ says:

Well, let’s see, in the 49 years since, Yankees 8 titles, with a serious shot at a 9th this time; the Pirates… 2. And the last one really shouldn’t count because of those hideous uniforms and that disco music. Even the Steelers’ polka music was better than disco!

I’m kidding, mostly. Besides, the Oriole team the Pirates beat in ’79 had bad uniforms, too. But to be totally fair, Ken Burns should have interviewed a Pirate fan about this, so he had somebody who didn’t look like a whiner.

  16. ParmaChick says:

Geez, did these whiners (Crystal, Gould, etc.) expect the 1960 Pirates to just roll over for the Yankees? Ha!!! A team has gotta win FOUR games in the World Series or they are LOSERS. Learn to lose with at least a modicum of class and grace for just once Yankee apologists.

  17. buckfan1969 says:

The Yankees won virtually every year back then, and listening to these Yankee fans whine about losing one to a gutty little team from Pittsburgh is too much.

  18. giverguy94 says:

    sweet vid!

  19. Borderite76 says:

Sour grapes. The best team is the team that wins the best of seven series. The scores of the indivudual games are irrelevant.

  20. bfnputz says:

Stephen Jay Gould – I think of the James Caan character in “Misery”, except I would chain you to a bed and make you watch a repay of Maz’ homerun over and over with toothpicks under your eyelids so you couldn’t miss a moment. With Billy Crystal right beside you, same way. WHat bitches!!!

  21. YankeesSteelersDucks says:

The good old days when guys hit 500 foot homers and didn’t strut down to first to show up the pitcher. They just dropped the bat and ran it out.

  22. dougalmac54 says:

Hey, Stephen Jay Gould-KISS MY PITTSBURGH PIRATES LOVIN” ASS, YOU LITTLE BITCH!

  23. MFIORE7511 says:

From Ken Burns “baseball”,which should have been called the “Yankees versus the Red Sox “.Thank god the Phillies are world champions !!!

  24. vitoduval says:

12-0 12-0 16-3 and they still lost, sounds like how you could beat the Red Sox these days.
