Albert Pujols hits first homer of season, returns to empty Angels dugout Teammates prank MLB star after home run Everyone was waiting for Albert Pujols to hit his first home run as a Los Angeles Angel. But only a trio of teammates were actually around to congratulate him when he finally did it. In a well-timed bit of cold shoulder comedy, most of the Halos headed into the clubhouse so Pujols would return to an empty dugout instead of a celebration. Only Mike Trout, Kendrys Morales and Mark Trumbo — who were already on the field — gave Pujols an initial round of high fives after he ended his season-long drought with a blast off Toronto’s Drew Hutchison in the fifth inning of Sunday’s 4-3 win over the Blue Jays. Watch as Pujols gets the rally monkey off his back: _ The dugout evacuation was apparently the brainchild of Torii Hunter, who quickly pushed his teammates toward the doorway as Pujols rounded the bases. But they returned once Pujols barreled toward the clubhouse in search of more people to party with. ”I thought that would be cool. I always wanted to do that, and it worked,” Hunter told reporters after the game. ”I just said: ‘Let’s get off the bench and go to the tunnel.’ He was excited about it and we were, too. We had to think fast. When I have a day off, man, I do stupid stuff.” As you might have heard, Pujols had played 28 regular season games and taken 110 at-bats as an Angel without showing the power that earned him a 10-year, $240 million contract in

Thursday, 01 September, 2011 Head Coach praises his side after 6-0 win over Azerbaijan. England Under-21 Head Coach Stuart Pearce believes his side can take a number of positives from their impressive 6-0 win over Azerbaijan and hopes they will get even stronger during the qualifying campaign. Pearce was thrilled to see his new look side come together so quickly as they got off to the best possible start in their opening game in Group 8. Henri Lansbury and Craig Dawson both scored two goals while skipper Jordan Henderson and Martyn Waghorn also got among the scorers. England’s Young Lions will now be brimming with confidence as they prepare for a friendly against Israel on Monday and Pearce believes it will be the ideal preparation for two tough away games against Iceland and Norway. Pearce said: “It was pleasing. There were a lot of good things and a lot of people making their debuts. There are some really good things we can take from that and it is a building block. “It is the first result of the campaign and I am looking forward to the game on Monday so I can look at one or two. We can come away from these games and have something to think about for the real tough October and November. “Across the board we can improve all-round. Any manager has got to take a 6-0 victory to kick-off the campaign. We have put down a marker now and we have got to improve on that. “I thought Lansbury was very good and Henderson played well and captained the team extremely well. Dawson did

To find out more about the England team visit: thefa.com England on Facebook www.facebook.com Follow us on Twitter twitter.com England secured their place at Euro 2012 with a scrambled draw in Montenegro – but Wayne Rooney was sent off and will miss the start of the tournament. Fabio Capello insisted Rooney was in the right frame of mind to play in stormy Podgorica despite his father’s arrest on Thursday in a probe into alleged betting irregularities, but his flash of temper – when he kicked out at Miodrag Dzudovic – suggested otherwise. England’s path to Poland and Ukraine next summer looked to be a smooth one as goals from Ashley Young and Darren Bent gave them a comfortable lead after 31 minutes. But England’s final qualifier, played out in the hostile surroundings of Podgorica City Stadium, turned on two incidents that will have cast a cloud over Capello’s delight at reaching another major tournament. Elsad Zverotic gave Montenegro hope with a goal with the last kick of the first half – and when Rooney was deservedly shown red by referee Wolfgang Stark, England were placed under pressure they could not survive. Just as the clash entered stoppage time Dzudovic crossed for Andrija Delibasic to head in at the far post for a goal that gave Montenegro the point that puts them into next month’s qualifying play-offs. Rooney’s sending off will be the main

…www.facebook.com … MLB umpire’s unbelievably bad call Tim Welke might be a little embarrassed when he goes back and watches a replay of this moment. Tim Welke makes one of the worst calls you’ve ever seen in baseball The “worst call ever” is a term that’s popping up quite frequently in the wake of umpire Tim Welke somehow deciding that Colorado’s Todd Helton was close enough to first base on Wednesday and that Los Angeles’ Jerry Hairston was out on the ol’ 5-3 force. I’m not sure I can go that far. It could have ruined a perfect game. It could have occurred in a crucial postseason game in October instead of on a getaway day in early May. But if we’re talking on a pure “holy heck, what planet was Welke viewing the action from” basis? Then yes, it probably is the worst call ever. One that the 27-year veteran and member of four World Series crews is going to have trouble shaking from his reputation in today’s instant world of iPads, Twitter and instant game highlights on your cell phone. Not that you needed a MLB.TV replay to know that Welke completely booted this ruling in the sixth inning of the Rockies’ 8-5 win over the Dodgers at Coors Field. In case you’re somehow worse than Welke and missed the call on both the big screencap and that replay, let’s go to Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. He immediately argued the call by either staging a demonstration of the distance between Helton’s left foot and first base or estimated the amount of Interent grief that Welke was

Second-half fightback sees Young Lions beat Israel in Barnsley. England Under-21s came from a goal down at half-time to run out 4-1 winners over Israel in Barnsley. Second half goals from Martyn Waghorn, Marvin Sordell, a Nathan Delfouneso penalty and Henri Lansbury, made for an impressive comeback as the new-look Three Lions built on Thursday’s Euro 2013 Qualifying win over Azerbaijan. But this one was a friendly, allowing Stuart Pearce to make nine changes from the side in Watford four days earlier as he looked at some more fresh faces. Just defender Craig Dawson and captain Jack Rodwell retained their place. There were three debutants in the shape of Manchester United keeper Ben Amos, Everton midfielder Ross Barkley and Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom, while there were four other first-time starters; Dan Gosling of Newcastle United, Marvin Sordell of Watford, Jonjo Shelvey of Liverpool and Hull City loanee Waghorn. However, England had very little to smile about during a first half that was largely dominated by Israel. 17-year-old Barkley, who was lively in his first outing and looked comfortable on the ball, delivered a powerful 19th-minute strike from 25 yards which was one moment to savour, but goalkeeper Boris Kleyman parried away well. Shelvey came close from the same distance, this time from a free-kick which beat the wall but dipped just a fraction too late, missing the bar by a whisker. There were also headers at the back post from both Dawson and Gosling, but
