Here is CBS’ introduction to game 1 of the 1989 NBA Finals between the Detroit Pistons and the Los Angeles Lakers. This features my favorite of all the NBA intros (and the third part is a little longer than it would later become).

I remember when Hubie Brown did this series. He has taught me everything I know about the game of basketball. God Bless him!
-
True. But they’ve got the NBA for six more years, so the suckage will continue for awhile.
-
Yeah; it made me laugh when I saw it.
-
ABC SUCKS!!!!!
-
“The Palace: Where L.A. fans are killed and eaten” Wow..they took this series pretty seriously in Detroit..
-
It was Michael Cooper’s last trip to the NBA finals as a player, too.
-
The 1989 NBA Finals marked the end of some events:
- It was Brent Musberger’s last NBA Finals he would narrate with CBS. He was booted from CBS Sports on April Fools’ Day 1990.
- Kareem’s final games occured in the 1989 NBA Finals as he retired after 20 years in the league.
- The end of the Showtime era and Pat Riley would be in his penultimate season as the head coach of the Lakers. -

if u can remember they used some of the intro grahpics from these last two years for some college games in the early 90′s i can remember seeing it on some season games like around 91′ till bout late 92 early 93.
-
Plus, the grahpics used in the intro of the 1989 and 1990 NBA Finals on CBS looked so advanced for its time that even today it would hold up pretty well if CBS ever regained the NBA rights someday.
-
Brent Musburger also works for ABC. Unfortunately since ABC does a shitty job at covering basketball, things aren’t going to pan out all too well.
-
I didn’t post the rest of the game because I thought the rest of the game was already up. I’ll publish my copies later on.
-
Starting lineups?
-
I have one intro from 1988, but it’s already on Youtube.
-
do yo have the intros of the 1987 and1988 finals?
-
That was game 6 of the 1989 Eastern Conference Finals between Detroit and Chicago.
-
What was the final game with the old intro?
-
I agree; it kept the same lyrics as the original, and updated it for the late 80s and early 90s. And just like the original, it got you pumped up for NBA action!
-
This was the 1st time CBS used this new NBA intro from 1989, just as good as the previous one!!!
-
You’re right; this would be so much better than what both TNT and ESPN/ABC do now! I hope somebody can pull that off.
-
Just imagine this theme song playing for today’s NBA. It would be awesome to see Brent Musburger doing an intro like this for the 2009 Finals.
Damn!
I want this theme song in an instrumental, mp3, download version, no voice overs!!! It would be an absolute blessing if someone out there can pull it off!!! -
Yeah; you never see that anymore. Brings back memories, doesn’t it?
-
I like the old school sport jackets with the CBS image on it LOL!!!!
-
Yes, indeed. Thanks for that, and also for subscribing.
